Wisconsin: Waukesha

The next day we rented a zippy little red sports car and drove to Waukesha to see Kay and Max. Max is celebrating his 92nd birthday this month, and incredibly sharp with an awesome memory and so many stories.

In the side yard, with the tomatoes Kay is growing.
My mother, Kay and I took a walk around downtown Waukesha on Sunday afternoon. Almost everything was closed, and it was soo quiet.

But! The streets are lined with ginkgoes, which I obviously loved. I bet it's sooo beautiful in the fall.

There was an antique mall open, so we went and poked around in there for a bit. I would have bought a bunch of stuff if I lived there, there were some good things!
And we had gelato. Kay is a wonder artist, and has been painting for so many years. Their house is full of beautiful art, many of her pieces and a lot they've collected over the years. I love it all. Here are my flags in the hallway, which was lovely to see. A drawing of Kay's, of Italy. She gave me a similar one, but watercolored, for my birthday, and I have one I've inherited from my Grandparents. This was painted in 1989, isn't it amazing? On our way back to Milwaukee we stopped at the Waukesha library, where this mural of Kay is up. It was painted by a former student. Kay taught art at a college in Waukesha for many years.
When we got back to Milwaukee we went to University of Wisconsin campus and tried to find a plaque dedicated to Max. We weren't sure where it was ... and finding it made me feel like I was on the Amazing Race, which made me realize I could never, ever do the Amazing Race. We found the plaque, commemorating Max's years as a teacher of Social Work. At the airport, I just love this sign.

I stared at it all through dinner, and then went back the next day to take photos :) I love the colors in this alley way!
